How to Remove Rust Stains From Tubs and Sinks

Homeowners with a well are typically plagued by rust stains in sinks, toilets, and tubs. While there is some amount of staining that is not fixable once it has set for long periods of time, there are simple and safe ways to effectively keep up on the rust to prevent long term staining.

There are commercial products like CLR and Red-B-Gone that claim to remove rust stains. The safety of products such as these has come under scrutiny and many people are searching for a “green” and safe way to care for this issue without a possible sacrifice of health and safety within the home.

There is a three step safe and simple methods that will care for most of the rust issues that you may have to deal with. The three items used are Dawn liquid dish detergent, distilled white vinegar, and the Magic Eraser by Mr. Clean.

The first step is to squirt the Dawn detergent on the staining and leave to sit for several hours. Then using a spray bottle soak the stains with the vinegar and scrub the stains. Then final step is to use the Magic Eraser to scrub the remaining stains. The Magic Eraser is made from melamine foam and has an abrasive quality that will remove stains from a variety of problems. There are some surfaces that could be damaged by the Magic Eraser so be sure to read the label precautions and test on an inconspicuous area before scrubbing thoroughly.

Rust stain can be a huge turn off for guests and do not need to be something that you simply accept as normal for life with a well. These procedures can reduce or remove long-term stains and can very effectively remove short term stains with very little effort.
